Did You Know You Can Explore Daegu with a Free Foreign-Language Guide?

A map full of saved places is a good start to a trip. Working out how those places fit together can take a little longer. If this is your first visit to Daegu, Dongseongro is somewhere to begin: browse Korean fashion and beauty shops, find a place to eat, and spend some time watching the city go about its day. For a closer introduction, there is also Pick & Go Vivid Dongseongro Tour, a Jung-gu district program that lets you shape a route around your interests and explore with a foreign-language guide at no guiding fee.

A route that starts with your interests

Some travelers stop at every old building. Others would happily spend an afternoon browsing Korean skincare or trying on clothes they would never have thought to buy at home. For some, choosing lunch is the most interesting decision of the day. This program gives those interests a place in the itinerary. Participants select a theme and places they would like to visit, then build a route around those choices.

There are seven themes: History & Culture, Play & Experience, Healing, Food, K-Beauty & Fashion, Korean Wave, and Night Views. The program offers both guide-accompanied and independent options. Before asking about a tour, think about what you would most like to get to know. Are you curious about Daegu’s older streets, or more interested in contemporary Korean tastes? If you already have somewhere in mind, mention it when you inquire and check whether it can be included. Your wish list is a useful starting point for discussing the actual route.

Follow the stories, the food, or the shop windows

For a first visit, WANTRIP suggests looking at History & Culture. Jung-gu’s Modern Culture Alley includes places such as Gyesan Catholic Church and historic homes, offering a way into the city’s past. An attractive building might be enough to make you stop for a photograph; learning who used it and what happened there gives you something else to look for. This is where a guide in a language you understand can make a difference. You can keep your attention on the place itself, listen, and ask about the details that catch your eye. If you would like to visit particular sites in the Modern Culture Alley area, confirm whether they can form part of your Vivid tour.

Preserve the building’s real architectural details and the season shown in the reference; do not add flowers or invented scenery.]

If food tends to shape your travels, consider the Food theme. Choosing a meal in an unfamiliar city often comes with questions: what is in it, how spicy is it, and is it meant to be shared? Make a note of dishes you are curious about and any dietary requirements before discussing your itinerary. It is an easy way to explain the kind of meal you would enjoy and ask which places might work. Let the organizer know about allergies or dietary restrictions in advance, and confirm them again with the restaurant. A saved food photograph can be the beginning of a plan, but a few practical questions help turn it into a meal you can enjoy comfortably.

For travelers interested in Korean fashion and beauty, the K-Beauty & Fashion theme offers another starting point. Seeing a product in person, comparing shades, or browsing a style you would not usually wear can be part of the pleasure of traveling. Mention any brands or products you hope to find when asking which shops can be included. Play & Experience may appeal if you prefer doing something hands-on, while Korean Wave is another option for visitors interested in Korean popular culture. Check the actual activities and stops before booking; a theme name alone does not tell you precisely what the itinerary includes.

There is also Night Views for those who like a city after sunset. In daylight, your attention might stay on individual shop windows. Later, the illuminated storefronts and the view along the street become part of the scene. If photography is a reason you travel, deciding which light you would like to explore in can help shape your plans. Ask about available evening times and guide arrangements when making an inquiry.

What is free, and how to arrange it

The program lists guiding in English, Chinese, Japanese, French, and Vietnamese. The guide fee is specifically described as free. Do not assume that meals, purchases, admission tickets, or individual activities are included; ask about any additional costs while discussing your route.

Applications are accepted through the Daegu Jung-gu district website, by phone, or at a tourist information center. Ask for “Pick & Go Vivid Dongseongro Tour” and have your preferred date, group size, requested language, and interests ready. The announced 2026 season runs from March through December, but you will need to confirm availability for your date and language. Check the meeting point, duration, agreed stops, and any separate charges before fitting the tour into the rest of your day.

WANTRIP PICK | Bring a little curiosity

When choosing your route, think about what you would like to ask as well as what you would like to see. It might be the history of a building, a dish you have never tried, or something you have noticed about everyday shopping in Korea. One question gives you a reason to linger, listen, and look again before moving on. If you have not decided what to see in Dongseongro, start with what you are curious about. That is a good way to choose your first walk through Daegu.
